Publication: Suicidal chemotaxis in bacteria

Bacterial biofilms often experience steep antibiotic gradients when they are treated because the high cell density within these communities both attenuates diffusion and removes compounds from circulation. Investigators in this study used a BioFlux shear flow system to examine the impact of antibiotic treatment under shear flow on bacterial motility and biofilm development. Using the imaging capabilities of BioFlux, the authors found that the cells responded to antibiotics as if they came from a competing colony growing nearby, inducing them to invade and attack.
