Publication: Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein Contributes to Atherogenesis via Co-activation of Macrophages and Mast Cells

Atherosclerosis is recognized as a chronic inflammatory condition that begins with the dysfunction or activation of arterial endothelium. In this study, the investigators used a BioFlux shear flow system to assess THP-1 cell adhesion to endothelial cells activated with the supernatant from oxidized LDL-treated macrophages/mast cells. The group used a BioFlux to discover that the co-activation of macrophages and mast cells by oxidized LDL elicits enhanced THP-1 adhesion to endothelial cells compared to direct activation of endothelial cells by oxidized LDL.
